Red Lips: 4 Ways

I don't think there is anything more classic than a red lip. There's something really sophisticated about it. However, it can be daunting, especially if you're not used to wearing makeup. I've put together a 4 stage guide of how to wear red lips. 

Stage 1: Sheer

Sheer red lips is a great starting point. The formula's tend to be more forgiving on the lips and it's a great way to get used the colour. My favourite sheer red lipstick is the L'oreal Rouge Caresse Lipstick in Rebel Red. It's very hydrating and the shade of red is really flattering on all skin tones. 

Stage 2: Glossy 

I think the next stage would be to add a red lipgloss on top of a sheer red lipstick. This will give more colour but remain low maintenance and easy to wear. My lipgloss of choice is the Revlon Super Lustrous Gloss in Fatal Apple. The consistency is really smooth and not sticky.

Stage 3: Lip Liner

A red lip liner is a great product wear on its own because it will give you the next stage of colour pay off and will last a really long time. I think a classic colour like Cherry from Mac is a great starting point because it suits everyone and the texture is really smooth.

Stage 4: Lip Liner + Matte Red Lipstick

This is the ultimate red lip. I'm partial to the classic combination of Cherry Lip Liner and Ruby Woo Lipstick both by Mac. Ruby Woo is a true fire truck red that's very matte. It's not the most forgiving on the lips so preparation is key for this stage. Exfoliate the lips, put a thick lip balm on and once it's sunk in, start with the lip liner. 

I find it easier to rest my little finger on my chin when applying lip liner for great control and balance. Make sure you fill in the lips with the lip liner too. If you want, you can always cheat the shape of your lip a little. Next, blot and apply the lipstick with a lip brush. Blot and repeat. For the final layer, go straight in from the bullet of the lipstick. Layering the products lightly means it's really going to last. The last step is to conceal around the lips to neaten everything up and give a professional finish.
