How to Clean a Makeup Sponge

Makeup sponges are wonderful. A good sponge can leave your face looking flawless but natural at the same time. However, they harbour a lot of bacteria. Today I'm going to share how I clean mine.

Quick disclaimer, I didn't come up with this method. I researched how to clean a makeup sponge a lot before I found one that works for me. I am in no way taking credit for coming up with this genius technique!

What you need:

A bowl
Water
Microwave
Your Sponge
Brush Cleaner (I use Johnson's Baby Shampoo)

Method:

  1. Put your sponge in a bowl and cover it with about an inch of water.
  2. Put it in the microwave for around 30-40 seconds.
  3. Let the sponge cool in the microwave for a few minutes before you take it out. It's going to be really hot.
  4. Run it under cold water and clean it with your brush cleaner.
  5. Rinse the sponge until all the product has come out and the water runs clear.
  6. Ring it to get rid of excess water and lay it on a clean surface to dry.

This really is the best method for cleaning your makeup sponge because you're killing the bacteria in the sponge by microwaving it. You do need to clean it with something like a baby shampoo after because we haven't actually removed the makeup. We've only killed the bacteria.

I recommend cleaning your sponge after every couple of uses. However, if you are prone to acne, then clean it everyday. This will not only help prevent any breakouts, but it will also keep the sponge working properly.

If you have any other ways of cleaning your makeup sponge, please let me know in the comments.
