Prom Makeup Look: Red Lips and Winged Liner

Welcome to the final part of my Prom Makeup Look Trilogy! Today we are going for the classic winged liner and red lips. Let's get started. 

(I would like to put a quick disclaimer and say that when the pictures were taken, I wasn't feeling great which tends to make my skin and hair look really bad. If you want to know why I wasn't well, you can read that here.)

You guys know the drill- start off by priming your eyes. We're not going to be doing too much with eyeshadow but we're still going to use a couple of shades. Take a matte brown shadow and buff this into the crease using a fluffy brush. Keep blending! Next, using your finger, take any shimmery eyeshadow you like, I used Bobbi Brown 'Rose Gold,' and place this all over the lid. You could use a champagne colour which would beautiful too. Finally, go in with your fluffy brush and make sure everything is nicely blended and diffused. That's the eyeshadow done!

Now for the eyeliner. I don't know about you but I suck at winged liner. I can do it on other people but if I try and do it on myself, all hell breaks loose! I think the most important thing is to take your time and do your eyes first. That way if you make a mistake, you won't ruin your face makeup. I like to begin by using an eyeshadow as liner. Taking an angled brush and any dark shadow you have, line very close to the upper lashes. Doing this will help prevent any gaps plus it makes your lashes look thicker. After I have done that, I like to go in with a liquid liner pen to create the actual line. My favourite is the YSL Shocking eyeliner because it has a really flexible tip. 

I always find it easier to start by plotting out the wing on each eye. Next, drag it back on itself and start filling it in. You can then finish off your line making sure it gets thinner as you get to the inner corner. (Tip- keep some Bioderma and pointed cotton buds on hand to help clean up any mistakes.) If you can, line your upper waterline with a black pencil. I didn't do this in the pictures because my eyes were very sensitive that day- damn you hayfever! I would recommend it though because it really just finishes everything off nicely and helps conceal any gaps. 
For lashes, I definitely recommend individual lashes (again I'm not wearing any for the above reason). Place them on the very outer corner of each eye to enhance the wing. It's also going elongate your eyes. That's it! The eyes are done and if you're anything like me, it took an hour!

What an unflattering angle!

For the face, I kept it glowy. I had a lot of redness that day and my skin was looking quite dull so I used the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and the No7 Green Calming Base to perk up my skin. I then went in with the usual foundation and concealer, taking time to really blend everything in seamlessly. 

I love a bit of contouring so I used my 'Crushed Walnut" in the hollows of my cheeks, blending it out with my bronzer. I've started doing it this way because the bronzer helps to soften the contour and it looks a lot more natural. I also contoured my nose and temples using the same products. I also love highlighting and dabbed a little bit of MAC Cream Colour Base in Hush on the tops of my cheekbones, down the bridge of my nose and on my cupids bow. I would have highlighted under my eyes too but I haven't found a product that I like for that step. If you have, then I definitely recommend doing it. Just make sure that you're highlighting from the corner of your nose to the outer corner of your eye rather than just under the eye.

For blush, I kept it pretty neutral and just used a tiny amount of the Sleek Blush in 'Pinktini'. This helps add a bit of life back into the cheeks. To give my skin that healthy glow, I used the Revlon Highlighting Palette in 'Bronze Glow' and lightly dusted it all over the face using the Real Techniques Duo Fibre Face Brush. You can skip that step but I felt I need to give my skin an added boost. I love using these products together because they really give the skin a healthy look.

The lips are were the fun starts. I used the Bourjois Rouge Velvet in 'Hot Pepper' because it is seriously long lasting. Once it sets, it doesn't budge. It's also an orangey red which you all know I have a weakness for. You can use any red you like but I would recommend keeping it matte because they tend to stick around longer. If you do want to wear a glossy red lip, I recommend Tanya Burr's Lipgloss in 'Vampire Kiss.' It's a beautiful red with serious pigmentation and the lasting power is actually pretty good. To make your lips look fuller, take your contour shade and blend it lightly under your lower lip. You can also use a lip liner to shape your lip. I think invisible lip liners are awesome because you can pair it with any lipstick or gloss. They're becoming quite popular too with brands like Milani, Lipstick Queen and Urban Decay all offering them. I also like to take the time to conceal around the lips too. This just gives that finishing touch which helps everything look perfect. 

So that's all of my prom makeup looks done! I can't believe my mini series is over. I've loved coming up with the looks for these posts and I hope they've come in handy to you. Just remember when doing your makeup, to have fun! I always think that if you're having fun doing your makeup, then you're doing it right!
