Makeup Expiration

I feel like the topic of makeup expiration doesn't get a lot of attention. It's really important to know the basics because makeup, like most things, has an expiration date and is a breeding ground for bacteria. Using expired makeup can cause breakouts, irritation and can make you fall out of love with a once cherished product. Here's my guide to making makeup last longer and when to call it a day and toss it!

  • Foundation/Concealer- 6 to 12 months
  • Powders (Blushes/Eyeshadows etc)- 2 years+
  • Liquid Liner- 6 months
  • Mascara- 3 to 4 months
  • Lipstick- 2 years
  • Lipgloss- 1 year

That's just a rough timeline on how long makeup generally lasts. Use your own judgement and common sense. If a product looks, smells and feels fine after the expiration date, it probably is. If you notice any change in pigment, texture or smell, it's probably seen better days. Powders tend to last longer than creams and if you look after your makeup, it can last years. I like to spray my makeup (including creams) with a hygiene spray every now and again. This helps kill bacteria and doesn't interfere with the product. I love the Pro Hygiene Collection Makeup Antibacterial Spray. You can also use it on beauty tools like tweezers. I'd also recommend keeping your makeup away from any heat source. Storing cosmetics in a cold dry dark place is ideal.

I hope you've found this post useful. Let me know if you have any more tips!
