My Updated Hair Care Routine

The last time I did one of these posts was when I first started my blog. Since then, a lot has changed. Today I'm going to go through all the products I use as well as how I style my mane.
Before we get started, here's the deal with my hair, it's thick, curly and frizzy. I also have a very sensitive scalp that tends to get dry really easily as well as being flaky. I hate that word. Flaky. Eugh! Anyway, let start with all the products I use.

Products:

For shampoo, I have two. To aid my dry scalp, I use the Neutrogena T Gel Shampoo for Sensitive Scalps. I love this stuff. I've reviewed it in depth but basically, it's a great shampoo if you are having trouble with your scalp. I noticed a massive difference after my first wash and now it's a staple in my routine. The second shampoo I use is the L'oreal Hair Expertise EverStrong Shampoo. This shampoo is designed to strengthen the hair and scalp. I will be reviewing this in depth but for now, let's just say I really like it. It cleans my hair well and lathers up nicely for a non sulphate shampoo. I tend to wash my hair every 2-3 days but I if I really want to stretch that, I use the Neutrogena and the EverStrong shampoo to wash my hair. The combination seems to really clean my hair without drying it out.

Onto to conditioners, I use the L'oreal Hair Expertise EverStrong conditioner on a day to day basis but if I want a deep conditioner, I use the Tresemme Keratin Smooth Deep Conditioning Mask. Both work really well at adding the moisture back into my hair. If I'm honest, I'm quite fickle with conditioner. I like to try different ones but I still haven't found the 'one.' If you have any recommendations, please let me know!

When I come out of the shower, I use the L'oreal Extraordinary Oil. I've mentioned my love for this numerous times. It's a fantastic hair oil and I don't feel the need to try something new. I use it every time I wash my hair and cannot live without it.

Styling:

So, my styling routine actually starts in the shower because preparation is key. I always brush my conditioner through my hair using my Tangle Teezer. I do prefer the Wet Brush, but since I also own a Tangle Teezer, I might as well put it to use. After I wash the conditioner out and before I get out of the shower, I brush my hair again. I then put my hair up in a towel while I continue with my skincare routine.

After I've done all of that, I take my hair down, find my part and finger comb. I do not brush or comb my hair when it is wet/damp. The reasoning behind that is I loose the curls and my hair gets really weird. I don't get tangles because I've conditioned well and already combed it through in the shower. I then put in about 3 pumps of the L'oreal Extraordinary Oil through the mid lengths and ends of my hair. Whatever is left on my hands gets worked into the top of the hair. I then put my hair up in a hair turban by Soap and Glory. It's basically a micro fibre towel that absorbs the excess moisture in your hair. It doesn't dry your hair, but it certainly speeds it up.

I leave my hair up in the towel for a good couple of hours if I can. Once I take it down, I let my hair dry naturally. I know the shock! I never thought I would air dry my hair regularly, but hey, things change! I actually love letting it air dry because it saves me a lot of energy. If I want my hair to dry a bit quicker, I will use the diffuser attachment on my hair dryer, but that's only if I have to. When I let my hair air dry, I do scrunch it up a few times and twirl sections around my fingers occasionally. This just helps the curls form a bit better. When my hair is 90% dry, I'll tie it up in a loose bun for a while. Again, this helps the curls form and makes nice waves.

That's it really. If I'm doing something special or taking blog pictures, I'll straighten the roots of my hair as well as any baby hairs. This pulls everything together and makes it look more polished. I'll also take my curling wand and put in a few extra curls around my face and through the mid lengths. Nothing too precise, just enough to frame the face nicely. It sounds like a lot, but really it takes about 5 minutes.

So that is my updated hair care and styling routine. It's been a long time coming and no doubt it will change again! I'll be posting reviews of the L'oreal shampoo and conditioner as well as the Soap and Glory hair turban soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

What's your favourite hair product?

Thanks for reading,
Avani
